Tabula rasa have been used by John Locke in the Human Understanding to describe the state of the human mind at birth. His contention was that innate a priori knowledge is a fiction and that only exprerience can furnish the mind with ideas. In his brilliant 1689 work An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, Locke argues that, at birth, the mind is a tabula rasa (a blank slate) that we fill with ‘ideas’ as we experience the world through the five senses.
